Miller Johnson is seeking an Immigration Member to join our Immigration Practice Group. This opportunity is ideal for an entrepreneurial attorney with an established foundation in immigration law who is looking to leverage the resources, reputation, and collaborative platform of one of Michigan's leading full-service law firms to continue growing their practice.
The successful candidate will maintain an active caseload involving sophisticated immigration matters while working alongside an experienced practitioner through a period of succession and transition. What You'll Do
As a Member of our Immigration Practice Group, you will:
- Maintain primary responsibility for an active caseload, handling matters from intake through resolution while helping ensure continuity of client service during a planned succession and transition period.
- Represent clients in removal proceedings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review.
- Prepare and litigate asylum applications and other humanitarian forms of relief before the Executive Office for Immigration Review.
- Draft motions, briefs, and appeals before the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal courts.
- Handle habeas corpus petitions and other federal litigation matters.
- Prepare and file waivers of inadmissibility and handle complex immigration matters involving significant legal and procedural challenges.
- Counsel clients regarding visa revocations, denaturalization proceedings, and due process concerns.
- Advise employers on H-2A and H-2B temporary worker matters and related compliance issues.
- Conduct client consultations and prepare clients and witnesses for testimony.
- Collaborate with colleagues across practices where immigration issues intersect, including criminal, business, and other areas of law.
- Build and strengthen client relationships while identifying opportunities to expand existing engagements and cultivate new business over time.
- Mentor associates and support staff while contributing to the continued development of the Immigration Practice Group.
- Participate in professional organizations, thought leadership initiatives, and business development activities that enhance the visibility and reputation of the practice.
What You Bring
The successful candidate will bring strong client relationships, entrepreneurial drive, and a desire to continue building a sophisticated immigration practice within a collaborative environment.
Qualifications include:
- Juris Doctor from an ABA accredited law school.
- Admission to the Michigan State Bar or eligibility to waive into Michigan.
- Significant immigration law experience, preferably eight or more years.
- Experience handling sophisticated immigration matters before federal agencies and courts.
- Demonstrated success developing and maintaining client relationships.
- Demonstrated business development aptitude and an interest in continuing to grow a practice over time. While a portable book of business is welcomed, it is not required.
- Strong advocacy, communication, and strategic thinking skills.
- Experience with removal defense, asylum matters, waivers of inadmissibility, and Immigration Court proceedings.
- Experience before the Board of Immigration Appeals and federal courts preferred.
- Familiarity with H-2A and H-2B visa matters is a plus.
- A collaborative approach to practice and commitment to exceptional client service.
