Position Description

Advertised Job Summary

Under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Immigration Services, the Immigration Services Advisor for the Office of International Student and Scholar Support provides intermediate-level advising on employment-based immigration matters for individuals in the F-1 and J-1 programs. Also serves as a Designated School Official (DSO) and Alternate Responsible Officer (ARO).

Job Related Minimum Required Education and Experience

Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job-related field and 2 or more years of job-related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job-related certification, training, education, and/or experience.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials

U.S. Citizenship or Permanent Residency is required for Designated School Official duties.

Preferred Qualifications

Master’s degree
Prior experience with F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant student regulations
Prior experience working in an International Student Office and/or as a Designated School Official
Prior experience with SEVIS government system as a Designated School Official or Alternate Responsible Officer
Prior experience in the culture-crossing process and/or an understanding of the dynamics of cultural adjustment

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Demonstrated knowledge of F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant student regulations
Demonstrated skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Teams, Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, and web page creation and maintenance.
Strong customer service and intrapersonal skills.
Superlative oral/written communication skills, with particular emphasis on explaining complex concepts to individuals who have limited proficiency in English
Organizational skills, attention to detail, including the ability to review documents and other work and make corrections/suggestions for clear understanding
Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, balance multiple priorities, and meet deadlines under pressure
Ability to operate with the highest levels of confidentiality.
Ability to research and interpret federal regulations, and use the regulations to make sound decisions related to F-1 student and J-1 Exchange Visitor status
Skills in problem-solving
Ability to work and partner effectively with others of diverse work styles and preferences

With the Assistant Director for Immigration Services, manage and facilitate the USC International Affiliate Appointment process for academic and scientific units across the University of South Carolina System. Process document requests for international personnel and Affiliates, including travel document endorsements, and SC driver’s license and Social Security Number requests.

Serve as primary contact responsible for responding to phone and email inquiries from active and prospective students, exchange visitors, and academic units.
