Organization Overview
MCOHA is a highly regarded and trusted non-profit organization providing free and low-cost immigration legal services and community education in our Center for Citizenship and Legal Immigration (CCLI). We represent unaccompanied minors and victims of domestic violence and other crimes with asylum and visa applications as well as in related family court matters. Our staff are fully bilingual (English/Spanish) and representative of our community.
Position Overview
MCOHA seeks a dedicated lawyer to lead our Center for Citizenship and Legal Immigration (CCLI). The Supervising Attorney will manage and oversee the work of staff attorneys, law clerks, paralegals and an administrative assistant, who will all, in turn, provide valuable support to the Supervising Attorney. In addition to overseeing legal staff, the Supervising Attorney will represent clients and maintain a caseload, as well as manage legal education initiatives and track performance metrics for grant reporting. The Supervising Attorney will be responsible for ensuring the excellence of the CCLI’s work.
Responsibilities
- Supervise staff attorneys and support staff, providing guidance on case strategy, legal research, and client interactions, to ensure holistic, high quality legal representation to clients is provided.
- Supervise and review the work product of staff attorneys and support staff.
- Represent clients by maintaining a caseload and co-counselling with staff attorneys.
- Represent clients in immigration court proceedings, including Master Calendar Hearings and Individual Hearings before the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR).
- Appear before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) for interviews related to asylum applications, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJ), U visas, and VAWA (Violence Against Women Act) petitions.
- As needed, represent clients in family court appearances regarding SIJ.
- Assist staff attorneys with client consultations.
- Manage community education initiatives such as Know Your Rights workshops and civic classes.
- Track performance metrics for grant reporting and draft required funder reports.
- Ensure that all matters related to legal services are properly documented in LawLogix.
- Stay apprised of developments in immigration law and promptly communicate pertinent regulatory and legislative changes to CCLI staff.
- Identify professional development opportunities and facilitate training for CCLI staff.
- Develop and maintain a productive, supportive work environment for the CCLI team.
- Meet and communicate with other Program Directors regularly and as needed.
- Support MCOHA staff and organization goals.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor degree from an accredited law school
- New Jersey state bar admission
- 5+ years of experience practicing immigration law. Experience with asylum and the visa applications we handle is a plus.
- Excellent written, oral and organizational skills.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and analytical skills
- A passion equity, justice and community-centered legal practice.
- Experience managing a team strongly preferred.
- Public interest law experience is a plus.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English and Spanish fluently.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary is commensurate with qualifications in the range of $110,000 - $120,000.
