Novo Legal Group is an immigrant rights law firm - no, a human rights firm. We take tough cases, apply an innovative and collaborative approach, and we win. If you have little experience in removal defense or immigration litigation, know that our win rate is exceptional, and not just at the trial level - before administrative and circuit courts of appeals as well. We work hard to deliver the best possible results for our clients where other firms have given up or already failed. The work is difficult, but fulfilling, and we strive to provide a familial yet professional environment to hone our craft.
If you are motivated to work with marginalized populations (primarily Mexico and Central America) who have fled to the US to escape violence and persecution, to pursue safety and opportunity, and anything in between - read on.
If you're willing to do the difficult work to improve yourself and your skillset, to become a creative and zealous advocate, and to advance the interests of our clients without succumbing to the realities of secondary trauma - please continue.
If you are looking for a flush expense account, corporate clients, and a salary that will disqualify you from any income- based-repayment-program for your student loans - you've missed your exit.
The Role
We’re looking for a passionate, courtroom-ready Immigration Litigation Attorney to join our Seattle-based removal defense team. You will represent clients before the EOIR, BIA, and Federal Circuit Courts of Appeals, drafting persuasive briefs and litigating complex cases for individuals seeking safety, justice, and opportunity in the U.S.
This role is ideal for a newly licensed attorney or an experienced advocate ready to sharpen their trial skills in a high-volume, mission-driven practice.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent clients in removal proceedings before EOIR, focusing on asylum, withholding, CAT, and related relief.
- Draft compelling briefs, motions, and appellate filings for the BIA and Federal Circuit Courts.
- Collaborate with senior attorneys to develop innovative case strategies.
- Supervise and direct assigned paralegals in furtherance of litigation goals.
- Prepare clients for hearings and cross-examination, identifying strengths and mitigating weaknesses.
- Review, refine, and finalize evidentiary submissions.
- Provide coverage for colleagues in hearings and interviews as needed.
- Stay current on immigration law and policy changes, and adjust strategies accordingly.
Desired Qualifications:
Moderate experience is required, but everyone has bad habits and blind spots in the law. You will learn through direct experience, training sessions, and mentorship. Other qualifications include:
- Spanish Language Skills (conversational): Where this area is lacking, we can provide tools and opportunities for improvement.
- Ability to work effectively and professionally with lawyers, paralegals, legal assistants, and clients.
- Our office culture is paramount and we will move quickly to address toxic behaviors. Life is too short to dislike your colleagues.
- Demonstrated commitment to civil rights and liberties consistent with the values of our firm.
- Exceptional written and oral advocacy skills.
- Experience working in a fast-paced environment with a keen ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects and deadlines.
- Experience working and communicating with marginalized or vulnerable communities.
- Cultural competence to work cooperatively with diverse community organizations and coalitions.
- Sense of humor.
