Orientation and Mobility Specialist
Primary Function
- In collaboration with Area Education Agencies (AEAs) and Local Education Agencies (LEAs), and using an itinerant model, the Orientation and Mobility Specialist provides direct and consultative orientation and mobility services to students with visual impairments, in their local school and home settings.
- Formulates appropriate educational objective, activities, evaluation, goals, and instruction.
- Reports student growth and programs to parents periodically.
- Participates as a member of multidisciplinary teams; involved with evaluations; educational planning.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in orientation and mobility plus experience using a computer and other office equipment required. Candidates must meet State of Iowa orientation and mobility specialist licensure requirements by the time of appointment. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa daily also required. Master’s degree in orientation and mobility and experience with school-age children preferred.
Salary And Benefits
Salary will be determined by the successful applicant’s educational and teaching experience.
(BA degree - $46,706-$72,466; MA degree – $54,825-$84,530). Tuition reimbursement and continuing education opportunities available.

Position Details
Full-time, School-year appointment. Position starts immediately. The service region covers
Des Moines, IA and surrounding area. The ability to travel throughout a designated region within Iowa daily required. Will work with students across multiple Iowa school districts within the Heartland AEA. Criminal and other relevant background checks are also required
- Heartland AEA – Full Time (Itinerant) office located in Johnston, IA
Minimum Qualification Requirements
Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:
- One of the following current licenses from the Iowa Board of Educational Examiners:
- School Psychologist; or
- School Counseling; or
- Speech Language Pathologist.
- All of the following (a and b):
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in orientation and mobility; and
- Possession of a current Iowa Orientation and Mobility Specialist license.
- All of the following (a and b):
- Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in any field; and
- Possession of a current Iowa Teaching Certificate.
