Organizational Summary:

The New Jersey Alliance for Immigrant Justice (NJAIJ) is the state’s largest immigration coalition. Together with over 60 member organizations, NJAIJ fights for policies that empower and protects immigrants. We are seeking applications for a Community Empowerment Facilitator.

NJAIJ brings together the power and strength of over 60 member organizations to ensure immigrant communities are leaders in campaigns that advance justice, inclusion, and belonging. Our recent campaign wins include a state-wide ban on ICE detention centers, the first of its kind on the East Coast, and driver's licenses for all regardless of immigration status.

The Role:

The Community Empowerment Facilitator will deliver NJAIJ programs, workshops, and trainings on a variety of topics including Know Your Rights (KYR), immigration policy, or other topics that fall under the Movement Building Team’s program catalog. The Community Empowerment Facilitator reports to NJAIJ’s Movement Building Manager and works in close collaboration with other NJAIJ teams and staff. This role centers on delivering KYR trainings, and engaging coalition members and partners on issues impacting immigrant communities (e.g., immigration enforcement, access to services, housing, and labor rights). The successful Community Empowerment Facilitator will be able to deepen leadership capacity and rights awareness among grassroots individuals and community organizations across the state.

This is a hybrid position that combines some remote work from home, remote work from partner organization sites or events, and in-person attendance at our Newark office. The role will occasionally require periods of standing, walking, and light lifting (boxes with outreach materials, banners, etc). NJAIJ requires proof of COVID-19 vaccination for all staff.

Responsibilities:

In addition to supporting NJAIJ’s overall mission, the Community Empowerment Facilitator will be responsible for:

Expanding NJAIJ’s Training & Community Empowerment by:
- Facilitating KYR trainings in multiple settings (community centers, schools, faith-based organizations, online, etc.);
- Tailor presentations to diverse audiences, including recent immigrants, undocumented individuals, youth, and families;
- Draft and/or update training materials in response to policy changes and community feedback;
Building the resiliency of New Jersey’s immigrant justice movement through:
- Using “popular education” and “train-the-trainer” practices so that communities are empowered to act and can and replicate workshop materials within their own communities;
- Identifying ways in which training participants may connect with other pieces of NJAIJ’s work including our Policy & Advocacy or Movement Building;
- Recruiting, training, and supporting community leaders and peer empowerment facilitators to co-lead and replicate future trainings;
Growing NJAIJ’s influence and ability to be a trusted source and leader on immigration, including:
- Representing the organization at coalition meetings, public forums, and partner events;
- Tracking and evaluating training participation, feedback, and outcomes for continual improvement;
- Maintain accurate records of outreach, attendance, and training requests so NJAIJ may facilitate relationships with additional partners in high-demand regions of the state;
- Collect community anecdotes, stories, and feedback so the NJAIJ’s Development & Operations manager may contribute to grant reports, program assessments, and storytelling initiatives that highlight the need forand impact of NJAIJ’s work

Qualifications & Core Competencies:

Competitive applicants will possess a majority of the following:

Deep personal ties or commitments to New Jersey immigrant communities.
Strong commitment to racial, social, and economic justice and critical analysis of systemic racism.
Demonstrated teaching, facilitation, or organizing experiences with adults, including ESOL instruction, Naturalization, civics or skills-based training, and other relevant topics (we know this can mean many things, tell us how it manifests in your work!).
Experience analyzing records and feedback to improve program effectiveness.
Careful attention to detail and well-developed time and project management skills.
Strong computer literacy and willingness to incorporate new tools and technology into their work.
Flexible schedule, including evenings and weekend hours to accommodate a wide range of community events and ability to travel locally and access reliable transportation.
Bi- and multilingual candidates who have reading and writing proficiency in Arabic, Haitian Creole, French, and/or other West African languages, Mandarin, and Cantonese are strongly encouraged to apply.
Enthusiasm for snacks, cute pictures of animals, and building collective community power.

Compensation:

Full time NJAIJ staff receive a benefits package including health care, dental, vision, life insurance, commuter benefits, and more.

NJAIJ staff receive 15 vacation days per year in their first year and 20 days per year in all subsequent years. Annual leave also includes 4 personal days, 12 sick and health, and birthdays. Staff leave also includes 14 paid holidays, and 3 heritage days for staff who observe celebrations outside those 14 days. NJAIJ’s office is closed twice per year, during the first week of July and the last week of December.

This position has a salary range between $48,000 - $52,000 annually. NJAIJ uses a fixed compensation structure to provide pay parity across similar roles in the organization. To preserve equity, salary range is not up for negotiation.

Interview Process:

Applicants will be notified if they are invited to a first round screening. Following first-round screenings, applicants will be notified if they have proceeded to the next stage of the interview process and will be expected to complete a case exercise. Applicants will have 4 days to complete the case exercise, for which all participating applicants will be compensated $100 for their labor, regardless of final selection for this position.

Following the completion of the case exercise, final applicants will be notified if they have been selected for final interview, during which we will request candidates provide 3-5 contacts for professional reference.
