The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is looking for an attorney committed to serving Palm Beach County’s low income population. The work involves a diverse array of civil legal representation of clients in immigration matters, all stages of Social Security Disability appeals, landlord-tenant and public benefits matters.

Job Summary

Provides and advises clients of their legal rights; ability to defend civil lawsuits, where applicable; knowledge, or willingness to learn variety of civil matters and administrative process; prepare and/or review legal documents. Ideal candidate will be able to handle a caseload with general to minimal supervision. Attorney is supervised by and reports directly to the Supervising Attorney. The Supervising Attorney continuously evaluates the Attorney’s work with a written evaluation done annually. The work schedule is as follows:generally Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. with occasional evening or weekend work to include outreach activities in the community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Represents clients before administrative and judicial tribunals in a full range of civil legal matters.
Conducts interviews of clients at the office or elsewhere.
Investigates and develops cases, including conducting necessary interviews and consulting appropriate agencies and resources.
Counsels and advises clients in legal matters.
Negotiates on behalf of clients.
Drafts letters, memos, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents and written materials.
Remains current on new developments in the law which affects Legal Aid clients.
Performs legal research.
Maintains accurate and complete records and files regarding cases.
Makes referrals and follows up referrals of clients to appropriate alternative or additional sources of assistance.
Serves on community, bar, and county committees, where feasible.
Attends staff and other meetings in the community, as assigned.
Maintains confidentiality of all information handled.
Complies with all agency policies and procedures.
Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks, and be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance standards, work deadlines and report deadlines.]
Must maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees, clients and partners of the organization and unit.
Assists the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed.

Position Requirements

Licensed by The Florida Bar.
Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school.
Excellent verbal and written skills.
Bilingual in Spanish and/or Creole is preferred.
Knowledge of the Florida and Federal Rules of Civil Procedure.
Dependability, initiative, motivation and concern for legal interests of clients.
Technically savvy to provide TeleLegal Services.
Reliable transportation to travel of upwards of 40 miles in one (1) day, multiple times a week, when applicable.
Requires occasional off-site work at the partner health clinics and/or agencies.
Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
Good judgment and organization.
Commitment to remain in position for at least two (2) years.
Ability to work independently and responsibly.
High ethical standards.

SALARY: Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes:

Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment.
Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment).
13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule).
Health, dental and vision insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment).
Employer paid short-term disability/long-term disability and life insurance (beginning first of the month after 30 days of employment).
Employer matches up to 3% of 401K plan contribution (eligible after one year of service).
Salary paid bi-weekly by direct deposit.
