The Arab American Association of New York (AAANY) is seeking a knowledgeable and compassionate Part-Time Staff Attorney to support the organization’s immigration legal services.
The Staff Attorney will provide legal support and guidance to AAANY’s immigration services team, assist with immigration clinics, review immigration cases and client files, and provide in-house legal case consultation. The attorney will work closely with program staff to ensure that immigration services are delivered accurately, ethically, and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and professional standards.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal guidance and technical assistance to the immigration services team.
- Support and participate in AAANY immigration clinics and related legal service activities.
- Review immigration cases, client files, and supporting documentation.
- Conduct in-house case reviews and provide recommendations regarding case strategy and next steps.
- Identify potential legal issues, risks, and concerns and communicate them to appropriate program staff.
- Assist staff in understanding immigration procedures, requirements, and relevant changes in immigration law and policy.
- Provide consultation on immigration-related questions and complex cases.
- Review legal documents and forms for accuracy and completeness as appropriate.
- Maintain appropriate documentation and case records in accordance with organizational and grant requirements.
- Help ensure that immigration services comply with applicable legal and ethical standards.
- Collaborate with program leadership and immigration staff to improve service delivery and case management practices.
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development activities as needed.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of client information and case records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
- Active license to practice law in New York State
- Experience practicing immigration law strongly required.
- Experience providing immigration legal services to low-income or immigrant communities preferred.
- Knowledge of U.S. immigration law, procedures, and relevant federal regulations.
- Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and case-review skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with clients from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage confidential information.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary team.
- Bilingual or multilingual skills, particularly Arabic, are strongly preferred.
