TriSource is seeking a passionate and dedicated Immigration Attorney to provide legal services to unaccompanied children in or recently released from ORR (Office of Refugee Resettlement) custody. The attorney will represent minors in a variety of immigration-related matters, including but not limited to:
Location: Newport News, VA (Frequent travel within Hampton Roads, Richmond, and to the Immigration Court in Arlington, VA)
- Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS)
- Removal defense
- State court proceedings
- Appeals
- Legal screenings
- Know Your Rights (KYR) presentations
You will also assist unrepresented children with legal referrals, preparation for immigration court, release requests, and filing essential immigration documents.
Key Responsibilities
- Represent minors in immigration and related state court matters
- Draft motions, briefs, personal declarations, and immigration forms
- Conduct legal screenings and Know Your Rights presentations
- Travel frequently for client meetings and court appearances.
- Coordinate with law enforcement and social service agencies as needed
- Supervise a legal fellow, interns, and volunteer legal staff
- Maintain accurate records, case files, and database entries
- Submit timely reports and invoices as required by funders
- Participate in naturalization workshops and community events
- Ensure legal compliance with all ethical and program standards
Qualifications
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree required
- Licensed to practice law in Virginia (Required), or:
- DOJ Accredited Representative; or
- Law graduate eligible to appear before EOIR under supervision
- Minimum 1 year of experience in family-based or humanitarian immigration law
- Familiarity with trauma-informed legal practices strongly preferred
- Culturally competent and committed to serving vulnerable populations
Preferred Experience
- Experience working with unaccompanied minors
- Spanish or other relevant language proficiency is a plus
- Prior work with non-profit or community-based legal services
Work Environment
- Based in Newport News, VA
- In-office role with regular travel required within the region and to Arlington Immigration Court
Salary $75,000/YR
