ORGANIZATION SUMMARY
World Relief is a global Christian humanitarian organization whose mission is to boldly engage the world’s greatest crises in partnership with the church. Today, organizational programming focuses on humanitarian and disaster response, community strengthening and resilience, and refugee & immigrant services and advocacy.
This position is contingent upon the successful acquisition of additional funding and may be subject to modification or termination based on the availability of resources.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Immigration Attorney will play a critical role in World Relief Western WA’s Immigration Legal Services (ILS) team. The primary role of the Immigration Attorney will be to advise and represent clients with our priority legal services, which include naturalization and adjustments of status applications. Additional services may include parole, temporary protected status, USCIS interviews, document renewals, family immigration petitions, and asylum.
ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:Client services: - Provide substantive legal screening to determine clients’ benefit eligibility
- Explain immigration benefits and advise clients on best actions to take for their specific case
- Assist clients with completing applications for immigration benefits
- Represent clients before USCIS, including filing applications, advocating for clients, and corresponding with USCIS, such as Requests for Evidence (RFE)
- Perform factual and legal research for personal caseload and in support of other ILS team members
- Communicate clearly with clients to gather supporting documents and evidence, and about all matters related to their immigration situation
- Advocate zealously for clients before USCIS and EOIR
Administration: - Maintain up-to-date record of client data and case progress in Law Logix database
- Ensure physical and electronic case files are accurate and up to date with most recent client documents and USCIS notices
- Respond promptly to client emails and phone calls regarding their cases and submit inquiries on case status to Department of State (DOS) and USCIS, as needed
Training: - Alongside ILS Program Manager, train other ILS team members on relevant legal topics, including how to file new kinds of immigration petitions
- Attend relevant trainings to promote an ever-growing knowledge of immigration law and tactics Maintain a working knowledge of significant policies, laws and trends in immigration law, particularly as it impacts low-income immigrants and refugees and share updates with other team members
- Train and supervise law students and pro bono attorney partners
Outreach & community education: - Assist with advertising WRS Immigration Legal Services to target immigrant populations
- Participate in and lead community education events on topics of legal importance to target immigrant populations
- Make referrals both internally and externally, as appropriate
- Other duties as assigned
JOB REQUIREMENTS:- Committed to the mission, vision, and values of World Relief
- Attorney in good standing with a state bar
- Demonstrated ability to work with people from a wide range of cultural, racial, religious and language backgrounds
- Demonstrated ability to build and manage a varied and demanding caseload, including excellent time-management, priority-setting, and organizational skills
- Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite, especially Outlook, Excel, Word & PowerPoint
- A desire to serve immigrants and refugees in support of the mission and vision of World Relief
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Bilingual in Spanish, Pashto and English highly desired
- Previous knowledge and understanding of immigration law and systems
- Previous experience with Immigration Case Management System Equifax (Law Logix's)
- Understanding of Washington State Rules of Professional Conduct and implications for practicing Immigration Law
