Duties & Responsibilities

Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision, develops and implements procedures and controls dealing with the processing of legal activities; processing of claims against the System or MetroPlus; monitoring of claims activities, preparation of documents, memoranda and research reports to facilitate the legal and special service to be performed by the offices of the General Counsel and/or Labor Relations Counsel.

Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Assists in the preparation of reports, correspondence and documents dealing with legal matters affecting legal relationships with vendors, governmental agencies and their constituencies, employees, community, public and all other appropriate legal communications and activity relationships.
2. Processes all claims made against the System or MetroPlus, including notices of claim, summonses and complaints.
3. Handles other services of process such as notices of liens, citations and subpoenas.
4. Provides information and guidance within the System and MetroPlus, and regarding the processing of legal inquiries, explanation of subpoenas, the production of various types of records and documents, rights of examination and audit, and disposition of service of process.
5. Monitors the flow of claims reporting, statutes, progress, disposition and anticipates complications to ensure legal resources will be expeditiously used, as required.
6. Implements procedures to control activity flow, including the preparation of paper work and maintenance of records.
7. Maintains appropriate agreements, files on standard operating procedures, files on Board of Directors and other appropriate legal records and documents.
8. Reviews legal and law journals and periodicals, the City Record for articles and announcements pertinent to the activities of the Legal Department or Labor Relations Counsel.
9. Assists in the preparation of searches and performs research in the preparation of reports and documents to facilitate legal activities in the Office of the Counsel and/or Labor Relations Counsel.

Minimum Qualifications

A baccalaureate degree issued after completion of a four-year course in an accredited college or university; and,
(a) Enrollment in an accredited university leading to an L.L.B. or J.D., or a one-year completion of studies in law leading to an L.L.B. or J.D. at an accredited university or law school; or,
(b) Two (2) years of responsible experience in a satisfactory full-time paid position in a legal office or legal division in business, industry, non-profit, governmental activity or military service.

Department Preferences

A Baccalaureate degree issued after completion of a four-year course in an accredited college or university in a related course of study; and At least one year of responsible experience in a satisfactory full-time paid position in a legal office or legal division in business, industry, non-profit, governmental activity or military service; or
Suitable combination of responsible experience in a satisfactory full-time paid position and sufficient education credentials.
At least 1 year of experience as a paralegal in a business-immigration law firm setting preferred.
