Job Summary

Advises and supports international students, employees, visitors, or their dependents as they navigate the U.S. immigration system. Requires adherence to federal regulation, reporting requirements, and engagement with various government agencies on immigration-related issues and topics. With guidance, provides training to campus partners and supportive programming to international populations.

Responsibilities

Advise and counsel a population of approximately 800-1000 international students, their dependents, and their sponsoring academic units regarding U.S. government regulations, cultural adjustment, and sources of support available in the University and beyond.
Serve as a Designated School Official and Alternate Responsible Officer for the F-1 and J-1 programs at the University of Chicago in compliance with federal regulations.
Assist and participate in the development, promotion and presentation of programming and workshops for the University community on topics such as: obtaining and maintaining appropriate immigration status, tax preparation, logistics of life in Chicago, and other events of interest to our international community.
Develop and maintain the appropriate degree of expertise on immigration law and regulations, University policies and practices, and cultural sensitivity relevant to the work of the office by staying current in internal communications, the professional literature and government publications, and by participating in relevant training opportunities and conferences, including meetings with the units served.
Support the development and communication of consistent policy application that accounts for federal regulations and institutional policies.
Evaluate, prepare and complete all steps required in the issuance, filing and maintenance of immigration related benefits and petitions.
Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Work Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2-5 years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Certifications:

Per U.S. immigration regulation, U.S. citizenship or valid legal permanent residency is required. - U.S. Code of Federal Regulations

Preferred Qualifications

Experience:

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 2 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Prior immigration experience working with student-based immigration (e.g. F-1 or J-1) or employment-based immigration (H1B, J-1).
Prior experience working with federal regulations and compliance.

Technical Skills or Knowledge:

Proficient with Microsoft Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word.
Experience with database software.

Preferred Competencies

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Ability to interact with individuals from many different countries and with a wide range of English skills and foreign accents.
Demonstrated aptitude for using electronic systems and programs.
Great attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and creatively.
Ability to multi-task and to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Strong interpersonal and organizational skills, self-motivated energetic approach to work, and customer-friendly attitude.

Working Conditions

Ability to see, including color, depth perception, or clarity.
Ability to hear, including making fine discriminations in sound.
Ability to use computers extensively for 4 hours or more.
Effective audio-visual discrimination and perceptions.
