Job Description
Reporting to the Associate General Counsel for Latin America (LATAM), the Legal Counsel & Data Privacy Specialist will provide legal counsel and support to Fragomen’s LATAM offices and collaborate with Office of General Counsel (OGC) colleagues in the United States, EMEA and APAC. The successful candidate will support the Data Privacy Office on U.S. and LATAM privacy and data protection matters, helping manage and develop the Firm’s Privacy Program and ensure GDPR compliance. This position includes managing privacy exceptions, evaluating compliance initiatives, coordinating projects and business reviews, and developing policies and procedures related to Fragomen’s legal and data privacy practices.
About the team
The Office of General Counsel (OGC) supports the firm’s core business with a wide range of transactional, regulatory, and advisory legal work. The team addresses areas such as commercial contracts, compliance, employment, corporate governance, sanctions, and litigation. Team members collaborate globally with other OGC colleagues and local advisors supporting Fragomen offices.
Key Responsibilities
Privacy and Compliance:
- Support the administration and development of the Firm’s Privacy Program and GDPR compliance
- Handle daily firmwide privacy exceptions including response, investigation, and reporting
- Develop and update privacy policies and procedures
- Monitor legal and regulatory developments related to data privacy
- Respond to client privacy and compliance surveys
Legal Counsel:
- General corporate transactional matters: Drafting, reviewing and negotiating client and vendor contracts and commercial leases; overseeing the firm’s IP portfolio; responding to client compliance requests
- Third party due diligence: The Firm undertakes a very thorough due diligence of its vendors (especially local counsel) through a program overseen by the Office of General Counsel
- Third party vendors: Responding to inquiries from vendors and Fragomen client teams regarding third party contractual/compliance obligations
- Sanctions compliance: Understanding of sanctions obligations, preparing sanctions training and assisting OGC counsel in determining whether the firm is permitted to perform certain work under relevant sanctions programs
- Corporate secretarial: Attending to key governance functions
- Ad hoc projects, including working on future new office openings
Qualifications
- Licenciatura degree and active bar license required
- 2-3 years of experience in a law firm or in-house legal department working with commercial contracts, privacy law, or related legal work
- Fluency in English required; additional languages preferred (Portuguese a plus)
- Experience in international legal environments preferred
- Strong analytical, communication, and organizational skills
- Knowledge of GDPR, data retention policies, and international data privacy laws preferred
- Familiarity with AML and KYC regulations
- Excellent time management skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Attention to detail and commitment to producing high quality work product
