Job Description

The Washington Post is seeking a rigorous, ambitious and nimble journalist with a track record of scoops, enterprise reporting that holds government officials to account and explaining complicated policy to join its newly formed immigration team.

The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of U.S. immigration policy and a robust network of sources in the Department of Homeland Security, Customs and Border Protection, Immigration and Customs Enforcement and other federal agencies responsible for immigration enforcement and border security. We are seeking someone with creative ideas for how to better explain to a wider audience the real-world impacts of policy — and how the U.S. immigration system works and doesn’t work. We expect this reporter to break news about the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown while tracking how these policies are implemented, their limitations and their effectiveness. On this highly charged issue, we are seeking a journalist who can quickly write with authority and clarity.

The Post has made immigration one of its top coverage priorities, and this journalist will join a team of eight. An eagerness to collaborate with colleagues across the newsroom is required.

Responsibilities:

Break news about federal immigration and border enforcement policies.
Deliver ambitious analysis and enterprise stories shaped by original reporting and fresh insights.
Develop and maintain high-level sources.

Preferred Qualifications:

A high metabolism and proven ability to report and write breaking news with speed and precision.
A track record of delivering exclusive news and impactful enterprise stories on a competitive beat.
A deep understanding of U.S. immigration policy and border enforcement, and the ways decisions in Washington can impact communities around the country.
A commitment to fair, accurate and rigorous reporting, upholding the highest standards of journalism ethics.

This position is based in our Washington, D.C., newsroom.

The salary range for this position is: $122,500.00 - $204,100.00. The actual salary within this range will depend on individual skills, experience and qualifications as they relate to specific job requirements.

The Washington Post’s policy for employees is five days per week in the office, with exceptions for newsgathering and general business travel.
